It may not have worked out as we had DREAMED, but participating was WONDERFUL. Tencendur is fine and we are planning to try him on the grass to see how he takes to that.

Tencendur is from the first crop of Warrior's Reward, who scored his signature win in the seven-furlong Carter Handicap in 2010.

Warrior's Reward was bred to go a route of ground, as a son of Medaglia d'Oro and a mare by Seeking the Gold. But he never won past a mile, and settled for placings in such events as the 2009 Jim Dandy, Dwyer and Northern Dancer. Warrior's Reward stuck to sprinting as an older horse and concluded his career with a closing fifth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

While Tencendur has emerged as his highest-rofile performer so far, Warrior's Reward is also responsible for Prairie Gold L assie winner Strawberry Baby and Grade 2-placed Bad Read Sanchez.

Tencendur's dam, the winning Still Secret, never raced past 6 1/2 furlongs in a short career limited to three starts.

His family has been in the news of late thanks to his half-sister, multiple stakes-winning sprinter/miler Mother Russia, who is the dam of well-regarded Japanese sophomore Golden Barows. Winner of three straight on the dirt at Tokyo, including a juvenile track record-breaking maiden romp and a come-from-behind triumph in the Hyacinth S., Golden Barows was most recently third to Mubtaahij in the U.A.E. Derby.

Still Secret is by 1995 Hopeful hero Hennessy, best known as a speed influence through such offspring as Johannesburg, Henny Hughes, Special Duty and Madcap Escapade. But Hennessy is also the sire of 2011 Queen's Plate heroine and Canadian champion Inglorious and the high-class Australian Grand Armee. The latter two both received some stamina from their female line, however, that appears to be lacking in this case.

“ It’s a true fantasy to be able to think that in decades to come, that your children will tell their grandchildren that their father had a horse in the Derby. That kind of continuity of the history of racing is so joyful for a man who cares so much about racing...” –Phil Birsch
